Ballena Bay and Cano Island, South Pacific
Objective of the Excursion:
It seeks to show basic aspects of the life
and adaptations of whales and other cetaceans,
their value in the marine systems and their
relation with human beings inside the ecosystem
they belong to..
What is it about?
A boat trip from Bahía Ballena to Caño Island
is made with the purpose to look for whales
and resident dolphins in the area. Snorkeling
activities in rocky reefs of Bahía Ballena
are also made, and Caño Island is visited,
including one lunch and snorkeling activities
in coral reefs. A training session on snorkeling
activities is offered as well as a 60-minute
formal talk on the biology of humpback whales
and other cetaceans.
It includes:
Hotel, 1 breakfast, 2 lunches and 1 dinner,
private bus and marine transportation, entrance
fees to Bahía Ballena and Caño Island, educational
material, guidance by a cetologist and traveler
insurance.

6:00 a.m. Departure from San José (in
front of Hotel Costa Rica, Second Avenue)
11:30 - 2:00 p.m. Hotel accomodation, lunch
and rest
2:30 - 5:00 p.m. Snorkeling practice in rocky
reefs of Ballena Bay
6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Dinner
7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Formal talk and recommendations
for the next day

6:00 - 7:00 a.m. Breakfast
7:30 a.m. Boat departure to Caño Island
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Visit to Caño
Island. Main points of humpback whales sighting
are covered
2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Return to Ballena Bay
4:30 p.m. Departure to San José
9:00 p.m. Arrival to San José (in front
of Hotel Costa Rica, Second Avenue)

How are the facilities?
The stay is in cabins, with rustic style,
for double or triple occupancy. There is a
restaurant in the cabins with excellent food.
Comfortable bus covered with insurance for
all the passangers
Glass fiber boats, highly stable and safe
with capacity for 17 people. All the passangers
are covered with insurance from INS.
